Disability Rights Fund Opens Grantmaking to DPOs in 7 Countries

The Disability Rights Fund-a groundbreaking grantmaking collaborative supporting the human rights of people with disabilities-today announced its first grants competition.

The broad objective of the Fund -- which was launched by the Open Society Institute, The Sigrid Rausing Trust, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, and an anonymous donor on the first anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) -- is to empower disabled persons organizations in the developing world and Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union to effectively implement and monitor the CPRD.

In 2008, the Fund plans to give out a total of USD $700,000 in one-year grants ranging from USD $5000 - $50,000 and aimed at awareness-raising, strengthening coalitions and networks, and rights advocacy.

To be eligible for this year's grants program, applicant organizations must be based in and conduct the majority of their activities in the following seven countries: in Africa, Ghana, Namibia and Uganda; in Latin America, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Peru; in Asia, Bangladesh. In these countries, the Fund will support Disabled Persons' Organizations activities that advance the human rights of persons with disabilities at country-level.

Interested organizations are urged to review the full eligibility criteria and application details posted at the Fund's website, http://www.disabilityrightsfund.org. Any questions on the proposal process should be directed to info@disabilityrightsfund.org by July 15. The deadline for applications is August 15.

Disability Rights Fund Steering Committee Co-Chair, William Rowland, President of the World Blind Union, stated "The Disability Rights Fund heralds an innovative partnership between donors and persons with disabilities. The flow of new resources to support our struggle for rights is a development of major significance."

Looking for a mental health expert

Posted on: 6/9/08

I am looking for a mental health expert for an Asylum case. We need someone that can testify that our client will be mistreated and/or killed if he is deported back to El Salvador on account of his mental disability.

We have already performed a psychological and psychiatric evaluation but need someone to testify that based on his disability he will be persecuted if he were to go back to El Salvador based on the current conditions there. If you are unable to help would you be able to give some referrals. Thanks you so much for your help.

Best regards,

Individuals with ICF Experience Needed

Posted on: 4/17/08

Palmetto GBA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, has been selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to serve as the new A/B Medicare Administrative Contractor (A/B MAC) for Jurisdiction 1 (J1), which includes the states of California, Hawaii and Nevada, the territories of American Samoa and Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. In this capacity Palmetto GBA will be, among other things, developing education to help both physician and non-physician health care providers navigate the complex Medicare continuum of care. While administratively Medicare does not require the use of ICF, Palmetto GBA has successfully utilized ICF-based case scenarios to communicate coverage policy and help health care providers make administrative and clinical decisions.

Palmetto GBA is seeking individuals in the J1 region with experience using the ICF and providing rehabilitation services (e.g., Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and Respiratory Care) to the Medicare population. The individuals would serve on an ad hoc advisory committee providing feedback to Palmetto GBA's Medical Affairs area on proposed policy and education. Those interested in serving on the proposed advisory committee should contact Dr. Harry Feliciano at the address below:
