Abstract

In order to enhance its programs in the Americas in support of biomedical research and training activities, the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has developed, in recent years, effective partnerships and strategic alliances. These partnerships include shared funding and objectives with other institutes and centers at NIH; other U.S. Government agencies; and, regional and international organizations. The key for the success of these partnerships has been the clear understanding of the mission, vision, goals, strategic objectives, programs, and activities of all participating parties. Other crucial elements for the success of these partnerships have been the involvement of all stakeholders in the conceptualization, implementation, and evaluation of the program-related activities and initiatives, with emphasis on the competitive advantages of biomedical and behavioral research in reducing global disease burden and health disparities.
