Abstract: The Image & Graphic Reader (IGR) analyzes and retrieves information from business charts in newspapers and Web sites. The charts are presented to users with visual impairment by standard image processing methods for segmentation algorithms that produce homogeneous areas and contour lines characterizing specific chart types. The geometric features encode the tabular content of the chart. The scale used to measure the dimensions is defined in the image or is intrinsic to the type of the chart. The extracted tabular data is analyzed, and a representation that subdivides the chart into predefined levels is produced and verbally described. Thus navigation through the levels using a keyboard is possible with the speech synthesizer offering spoken feedback. (CIRRIE Abstract)
