Abstract: The objective of this study was to identify the initial consonant sounds in Mandarin Chinese that can be selectively lost by aging and to propose a filtering method to improve the hearing performance of the aging Chinese population. The participants were 30 individuals whose native language was Mandarin Chinese. The results indicated that eight high frequency initial consonants were asociated with a higher error rate of speech recognition than the other ones in Chinese. At teh smae time, the proposed filtering method successfuly reduced the error rate of speech recognition and achieved its goal to improve the speech recognition ability of older Chinese.
