Schematic shows principal cutaneous receptors for position sense, including their location and general morphology. The receptors are located both in the superficial skin at the junction of dermis and epidermis and in the deeper dermis and subcutaneous tissues. Meissner’s corpuscles are found in dermal papillae, while Merkel disc receptors are found between dermal papillae, along with free nerve endings in glabrous skin. (left side of schematic) Both Merkel’s receptors and free nerve endings are found in skin with hair. (right side of schematic) Subcutaneous skin contains pacianian corpuscles and Ruffini endings. In addition to their specificities in location, each receptor detects different sensations. Pacinian corpuscles, and to a lesser extent, Meissner’s corpuscles and Merkel disc receptors detect and mediate vibration sense. Tactile sensations is detected and mediated by Meissner’s corpuscles, Merkel discs, Ruffini endings, pacinian corpuscles and hair follicle receptors. Fine touch, however is mediated by Meissner’s corpuscles, Merkel disks and hair follicle receptors. These receptors have smaller receptor fields.
